How Do I Know If My Fence Needs Repair or Replacement?

A practical way to tell before you call anyone.

Start with how much of the fence is affected

A general rule we use: if the damaged sections add up to roughly 20% or less of the total fence, repair usually makes more financial sense. Past that point, the cost of repeated section-by-section repairs starts to approach the cost of just replacing the whole fence with something that matches and lasts as long.

Check the posts, not just the boards

Damaged boards or panels are often a straightforward repair. Rotting or leaning posts are the bigger question — if multiple posts are compromised, the structural support for the whole fence is in question, which tips the decision toward replacement even if the boards themselves still look fine.

Consider the fence's age

A five-year-old fence with storm damage is usually a clear repair candidate. A fence that's already 15-20 years old and showing damage is often close to the end of its service life anyway, which changes the math on whether repair is worth it versus starting fresh.

Look at what's causing the damage

Isolated storm or impact damage on an otherwise sound fence points to repair. Widespread rot, rust, or wood that's soft throughout multiple sections points to a material or age problem that repair won't solve for long.

When in doubt, get both numbers

The honest answer is that the right call depends on the specific fence in front of us. We give straightforward repair and replacement pricing on the same visit so you can compare the real numbers rather than guessing.
