Fence Repair vs. Replace: The Honest 20% Rule

Every fence inspection comes down to one question: is this damage isolated, or is it a symptom of the whole fence failing? Our rule is simple — if more than 20% of the posts are rotted or leaning, a full replacement usually beats piecemeal repair on both cost and longevity, because new failures keep cropping up around the patches. Below that line, repair is almost always the smarter, more economical call.

Why the 20% line matters

A fence is only as strong as its posts. When a fifth or more of them are compromised, the load the healthy posts are carrying goes up, which accelerates wear on the sections you didn't repair yet. You end up doing another repair visit within a year or two — and paying for two smaller jobs instead of one right-sized one.

What we check during an inspection

• Post condition at grade (where rot starts first)
• How many sections are leaning vs. just cosmetically worn
• Gate hardware and hinge-post condition
• Overall age and material of the existing fence
